ACTIVITIES

"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we submit the vindication of the Cause for which we fought; to your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles he loved and which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember, it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations."

This appeal, known as The Charge, was made by former Confederate Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee in 1906 and continues to guide our organization as we enter the 21st century. As proud descendants of the Confederacy's soldiers and sailors, it is most appropriate that we assume the lead in keeping their memory alive. Our acceptance of this responsibility forms the basis of all that we strive for as members of the Bennitt-Duke Camp.

Routine camp activities include participation in Confederate Memorial Day services, fund-raising for museum artifact conservation and operating informational booths for the general public. Other projects will involve periodic cemetery and monument maintenance.

We have also placed permanent Confederate flags at the Bennett Place State Historic Site and on the former grounds of the Hillsborough Military Academy. The Bennitt-Duke Camp is currently looking into erecting a highway historical marker noting Wade Hampton's final 1865 headquarters on the outskirts of Hillsborough.

Field trips and monthly meetings supplement our good works with a healthy dose of camaraderie and fun.
